MONTAGUE – The St. Mary Saints, losers of three straight games coming in, found themselves in a 3-1 hole as the first period ended Saturday night.
“It was a must win game for us,” St. Mary coach Don Goodreau on facing the winless Turners Falls Indians. “We had to find a way to generate some offense.”
The players responded to Goodreau’s appeal, exploding for five goals in the second, and adding two more in the third, ending a three-game skid with a victory going-away 8-4 over the Indians.
Kenny Bonney (2 goals) got the scoring started for St. Mary, taking a pass from Quinn Powers (1 goal, 2 assists) and beating Turners goalie Jordyn Lavallee for a 1-0 Saints lead.
St. Mary went on a brief scoreless drought until Pete Chrisanthopolis (2 goals) scored to close the deficit to 3-2 halfway through the second period. That goal triggered an offensive surge.
From there, Bonney tallied his second goal, Powers tied the game with three minutes left, and Shaun Gezotis (2 goals, 3 assists) put the Saints on top 5-4 just 30 seconds later. Austin Wolfe capped the middle frame with a shot from the point that found its way through a crowd and into the back of the net with nine seconds remaining and a two-goal cushion.
It was Wolfe’s first goal for St. Mary.
From there, goalie Matt Brady (34 saves) and the St. Mary defense held Turners Falls at bay while the Saints added a couple of third-period goals to finish off the Indians.
The win moved St. Maryback over .500 on the season at 5-4-1. Gezotis’ five points now gives him 25 total on the season (11 goals, 14 assists), good for seventh place on the Western Mass scoring list.
