Season set to spring to life

SOUTHWICK – Finally!
The high school sports spring season, while officially here, will finally get under way next week after poor weather conditions (excessive snow, cold temps) caused a delayed start.
According to Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional High School athletic director Frank Montagna, there is a real possibility to the Rams hosting some type of sporting event outdoors next week.
“I was losing faith that this day would even come,” Montagna stated in a press release issued Thursday. “We are looking at the first outdoor events of the season.”
The Southwick-Tolland- Regional High School boys’ track and field team is expected to host Sabis on Wednesday at 4 p.m. While Montagna said a softball game scheduled that same day against McCann Tech is “most likely (to) be postponed,” it is possible that the girls’ track team will host Westfield and Cathedral on Thursday, and the softball squad could play Sabis Friday. The baseball team is expected to travel to Greenfield late in the week.
The boys’ volleyball team, free from the wrath of Mother Nature, will travel to Dean Tech Monday and West Springfield Wednesday.
Other schools like Westfield High have dealt with similar conditions.
The only Bombers’ squads to see action this week include boys’ volleyball, girls’ tennis, and boys’ lacrosse.
Westfield boys’ volleyball varsity team improved to 2-0 with a 3-0 rout of the Indians at Ware late Thursday. The Bombers, led by Ryan Bucko (7 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace), Isaiah Headley (7 kills, 2 aces), and Eric Shilyuk (14 assists, 7 aces, 3 kills), posted scores of 25-5, 25-10, 25-13.
“We continued our strong offensive start to the season, and did so in an efficient manner,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said.
Westfield will next travel to Athol Tuesday night.
Said Wingate, “Our next match Tuesday evening at Athol will be a tough road test for us against a top defensive team.”
The complete schedule for the 2015 high school spring sports season for Westfield, Westfield Vocational-Technical, St. Mary, Southwick, and Gateway high schools will be released for print in Monday’s edition of the Westfield News.
