Slapped baby dies

DANIEL A. TORRES

WESTFIELD – An eight-month-old infant taken to the hospital and placed on life support after she was slapped by her father has died.
Daniel A. Torres called police Saturday afternoon to report that his daughter was unresponsive and not breathing. The infant was taken to Baystate Medical Center after being resuscitated at least eight times.
Torres, of 14 Parker Ave., Apt 3, Westfield, later admitted to police that he had slapped his daughter “in a fit of frustration” several hours before he called 911.
Doctors told police that the infant was unlikely to recover, had “almost no brain function” and would not survive without life support. James Leydon, a spokesperson for Hampden County District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni, reported Tuesday that the infant had died Monday night at the hospital. He said that the investigation would be continued by the Chief Medical Examiner’s office.
Torres is being held in lieu of $1,000,000 cash bail after he was arraigned Monday in Westfield District Court on charges of assault and battery on a child with substantial injury, assault and battery, reckless endangerment of a child and intimidation of a witness or police officer.
He is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial hearing on Aug. 28.
