SOCCER: Lady Gators win; WHS boys tie

HUNTINGTON – The Gateway Regional High School girls’ soccer team had a joyous opening day. The Gators shut out Easthampton 2-0 to open the 2012 season with a victory yesterday.
Ali Fisk scored the first goal at the 26:00 minute mark, on a pass from Chelsi Derrig. Hannah Green scored with 18 minutes remaining. Fisk and Jamie Pease assisted on the play.
Brooke Fairman earned the save in net for Gateway (1-0).

Northampton 2, Southwick 0
Northampton scored one goal in each half of its shutout of Southwick (0-1). The Blue Devils scored in the 7th minute, and tallied an insurance goal with 16:33 remaining in regulation.

JV GIRLS’ SOCCER
Southwick 2, Northampton 1
Haley Parker scored on a pass from Lexi Glynn, and McKenzie Frey notched a goal on Amber Nobbs’ feed to lift Southwick. Both goal-scorers are freshmen.
Morgan Harriman (2 saves) and Arielle Bryant (3 saves) combined for the victory in net.

BOYS’ SOCCER
Westfield 1, West Springfield 1
Kyle Murphy scored in the 36th minute, and Sam Blake made eight saves in net, including a key one in the final minute to secure Westfield’s 1-1 tie against visiting West Springfield.
Bombers’ sophomore forward Joe Graydon was solid, as well.
“Not bad for an opener,” Westfield coach Gabe Crane said. “Everyone was pretty rusty on both ends. It was a league game out of the box. We got a point out of it – that’s always positive.
