SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Civic Fund is gearing up for their annual summer fireworks.
Scheduled to take place on July 20, the fireworks will be set off around dusk at the starting line of the motocross track behind American Legion Post 338. There will be a bonfire prior to the fireworks as well as food vendors, music, and a disc jockey.
The Southwick Civic Fund is looking to raise $12,000 in order to purchase the fireworks and hire the police detail so that the annual vent can become a reality. A tradition in town, Southwick Civic Fund President and Select Board Chairman Joe Deedy will make sure that the summer staple continues.
“We’ll still do the fireworks even if I have to sell my (Chevrolet) El Camino,” Deedy laughed.
Receiving donations privately from citizens as well as from businesses in the local area, Deedy pointed out that Western Mass Rendering and Westfield Bank provided timely donations last year.
“They really saved us, they really came through in the end,” said Deedy.
Mentioning that “every penny counts” from the donations that are received every year for the fireworks, Deedy wants to remind people that Whalley Park is one of the best viewing areas for the fireworks, along with the bleachers near the American Legion 338.
“We have a beautiful park sitting there,” said Deedy. “It’s a great venue.”
Hoping for good weather on July 20, Deedy added that there is no rate date and the fireworks will be shot off rain or shine.
If anyone would like to make a donation to this year’s fireworks, they can do so on the Southwick Civic Fund website or drop off at Moolicious Farm. People can also mail a check or send cash through Paypal, by listing “fireworks” in the memo. The address for sending a check is as follows:
