Southwick Fire looking to hire Deputy Chief

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Fire Department is currently looking to hire a Deputy Fire Chief/paramedic, a new position for the department

According to Chief Russ Anderson, they’ve had a Deputy Fire Chief on the call force in the past, but never on the career force. The difference is that on the career force, the Deputy is involved in the day to day operations and management of the department. The Deputy on the call force is a volunteer position.

“There’s going to be more involvement,” said Anderson.

In the job posting, which was made available last week, the qualifications include having a Massachusetts Paramedic Certification, a firefighter I/II certification, a minimum of seven years of structural firefighting, and at least five years of experience in a fire service supervisory role.

Although Anderson said that they’ve already received a few applications, the position will remain open until filled.

“We’re hoping that we’ll have a pool of candidates within 30 days,” said Anderson.

Once the department has a full pool of candidates, Anderson will create a review board within the department to assess the candidates. The interviewing process will then come down to the final batch of candidates who will then be interviewed by the Select Board.
