Southwick school committee candidate: Maria Seddon

SOUTHWICK – Serving on the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School District school committee since 2015, Maria Seddon is now up for re-election on May 8.

Working in the Human Resources Department at Big Y, Seddon realized in 2015 that she wanted to make an impact in the community where her kids attend school. Prior to that, Seddon had been a PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) President at Woodland School and wanted to take the next step.

“I wanted to be part of it,” said Seddon. “I wanted to be an advocate for them,“ said Seddon of her kids.

Seddon has enjoyed her time on the school committee and is focused on being re-elected.

“I enjoy my time with the members of the committee and the administration and there’s a momentum going on that I want to be a part of,” said Seddon. “We want to bring the kids to the next level and I want to be a part of that movement.”

With a number of areas that the school committee is looking to improve upon for the district, Seddon is specifically passionate about a couple of topics. Technology is a major focus for her as she wants to improve technology so it could benefit MCAS 2.0. Seddon wants to see lesson plans on the computer.

Seddon also noted that she wants to work on what students in the district are being taught, especially at the high school level. Seddon wants what is taught in high school to translate to what is taught in college.

“We need to bridge that gap,” said Seddon.

Although the school district has been actively improving their school safety recently, Seddon wants to continue to work on more ways to improve it.

Believing that she represents her constituents well, Seddon feels that her time and work on the committee should cause her to be re-elected, including the fact that she knows what parents go through.

“I can relate to them because I’m a parent,” said Seddon.

With seven different individuals who represent the school committee, Seddon feels that each person’s perspective brings something unique to the committee and it’s something that she wants to continue to be a part of.

“We are in charge of the school district and there is a lot of pressure,” said Seddon. “We have parents who are vested in their kid’s lives and I can definitely work very well with that mentality.”
