Southwick seniors to ‘drive around’ Friday afternoon

Residents along the route are encouraged to decorate and cheer

SOUTHWICK – The closing of the school buildings because of the COVID-19 pandemic has not dampened the spirit of the Class of 2020.

Southwick Regional School seniors will take the traditional “Drive Around” the town May 29, honking and waving from decorated vehicles. The only difference this year is that residents are encouraged more than ever to cheer them on, hold banners and signs and decorate their yards.

“We are encouraging anyone to come out and cheer as they drive by. It has been a tradition in this town for the students to organize their own drive around after senior sign out, however, the class officers and advisors decided to make this an organized event this year,” said Class Advisor Amy Pomeroy.

Students will gather at Southwick Regional School between 3:40 and 3:55 p.m., then the police and fire department will lead them on the route around town and into Granville.

“We really wanted a way for the community to be able to see the graduates and show them their support, since any graduation events will have limited attendance,” said Pomeroy. “This is the major event planned for seniors by the school, however, community members have been hosting an Adopt-A-Senior Program to show their support — everyone wants to do whatever they can to show their support for the Class of 2020.”
