Southwick transfer station fees approved

The Southwick Board of Selectman approved the FY2013 transfer station flier this week, which reflects the same fees as last year.
“I am not recommending fee increases at this time,” said Department of Public Works Director Jeffrey Neece.
Neece said although the tipping fee at the burn facility in Springfield increased marginally, he believes the current level of funding in that line item is more than enough, unless there is a “dramatic increase” in trash tonnage, which he does not expect.
In addition, Neece said he is hoping to save money on mattress removal.
“I’ve been talking to Yankee Mattress,” he said. “Currently, we collect $35 per mattress or box spring, and it costs us $36, Yankee Mattress is suggesting, verbally, that he can process them for $15-$20.”
Neece said the details about drop-off and pick-up and whether or not there are a minimum number of items for that price have not been hammered out yet.
“I’m also looking at electronics,” Neece said, adding he hopes to reduce costs in that area as well.
Neece said the transfer station services have not changed. However, he clarified that the station does accept items containing mercury.
“Anything that contains mercury, we will take and process,” he said.
Selectman Russell Fox asked Neece if he could tape a segment on the transfer station for Channel 15 to reinforce to residents what they can take there, and what they can recycle.
The transfer station, located at 22 Industrial Road, is open Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Wednesdays from 8 a.m. – 4:20 p.m.; Fridays from 8 a.m. – 4;20 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 3:50 p.m. The station is closed Mondays and Thursdays.
Residents can purchase a yearly transfer station sticker for $90 at the station during the last two weeks in June and the first two weeks in July or at the Town Clerk’s office. Other sticker options include a pro-rated sicker, a senior citizen sticker, a second sticker, a replacement sticker,a recycling only sticker and a one-day pass.
Items that may be brought to the station for an additional fee include televisions and computers, appliances, mattresses, tires, propane tanks and more.
The new fliers will be distributed once they are printed. For information on the transfer station, visit the station during its business hours or visit the DPW Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
