Springfield College overwhelms Westfield State to remain perfect

WESTFIELD – The undefeated Springfield College Pride women’s basketball team defeated the Westfield State Owls, 93-59, at the Woodward Center on Thursday.
Springfield remained perfect on the season, improving to 8-0 with the non-conference win. The Pride are currently receiving votes in the WBCA and D3hoops.com National Poll. Westfield State slipped to 1-6.
Springfield jumped in front early and controlled the game throughout. The Pride’s size advantage proved too much for the Owls, outrebounding Westfield 61-36 and scoring 62 points in the paint while only allowing four. The Pride finished the day shooting 51% from the field.
Three players for the Pride posted double-doubles in a very balanced offensive attack. Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater/Coyle and Cassidy) posted an impressive stat line of 17 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five blocked shots. Sidney Wentland (Elk River, Minn.) grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and added 14 points while Rachel Vinton (Rutland/Wachusett Regional) posted 15 points and dished out 11 assists. Stephanie Lyons (Boston/Thayer Academy) was a blistering 9-14 from the field on her way to a team leading 19 points.
The Owls were led by Melissa Gray (Peabody) who was 5-11 beyond the arc for 19 points. Gray grabbed a team leading nine rebounds and picked up seven steals in the setback. Paris Wilkey (Lynn Classical) was the only other Owl to register double digit points with 12.
