SOUTHWICK – The June 7 Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional High School graduation will have a few more rules this year.
Principal Pamela Hunter and Vice Principal Thomas Osborn told the School Committee they have worked with students, officers and parents to “tighten up” graduation this year.
“One of the discussions was what to bring and where,” said Hunter. “We talked about not decorating caps, but it hasn’t been a big problem.”
Hunter said that decorated caps deemed “inappropriate” would not be allowed.
Hunter said another tradition that was discussed but will remain is allowing students to select their own partner walking down the hill to the ceremony. However, she added that students will not choose where they sit.
“Mr. Montagna and Mr. Osborn will decide who they sit next to,” said Hunter.
Osborn said students will gather on the hill where they will be given a breathalyzer test.
“We will confiscate any noise makers, beach balls, etc,” said Osborn. “Any disruption, if minor, will result in the student being warned. We will have a police officer there to assist.”
Osborn said he wants “to provide the respectful ceremony the students deserve and the parents deserve.”
Hunter also suggested that, at the recommendation of Superintendent John Barry, the graduation start could be moved to 5 p.m.
“Students were happy about this and said it gets too dark to take pictures,” Hunter said.
Osborn said another discussion centered around student attire.
“If they can wear it to class, it’s appropriate for graduation,” he said.
Barry said they have been talking about this graduation since last graduation.
The committee agreed to move forward with the plan outlined last night.
