NORTH ADAMS – Westfield State University recieved a goal and an assist from Ashleigh Chretien in a 3-0 victory over MCLA at Shewcraft Field on Saturday.
The Owls improve to 8-5 overall, but more importantly 4-1 in the conference. MCLA drops to 6-9 overall and is 1-4 in the MASCAC.
Chretien ignited the scoring as she passed a thru ball to Sarah Sypek in the 22nd minute. Sypek easily beat MCLA goalie Danielle Heinsohn to the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead. MCLA had opportunities to answer in the opening half, none better than leading scorer Natalie Caney’s attempt from in close that just went wide.
The Owls took complete control in the second half, outshooting MCLA 13-5 in the period. Chretien scored in the 46th minute as she sent a shot from just outside the box at Heinsohn, who got an outstretched hand on it, but it caught the crossbar and went in for a 2-0 lead.
Ali Blanchette rounded out the scoring for Westfield as she knocked home a direct kick in the 65th minute.
Westfield outshot MCLA, 26-12, and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Heinsohn was challenged all day and stopped 14 shots. Jess Habif made three saves for Westfield State.
