Stunner: Another ‘W’ for WHS

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School boys’ wrestling team delivered a stunning performance Wednesday night, defeating visiting Southwick 39-36.
The Bombers started quick and finished strong against an experienced Southwick Rams’ squad.
Westfield 113-pound junior Josh Larriu started the night off right for the home team. In his return to action, Larriu energized his team with a quick pin of Southwick’s Dan Roter at 1:12.

At 120 pounds, Westfield senior Cole Cannady continued his pinning ways with another pin at 1:14. The individual victories continued to pile up for the Bombers as junior Isaac Santos pinned his opponent in 56 seconds, junior Vitalliy Borodin (132 pounds) won by fall in 1:12, junior Louis Rogers (138) followed with a pin at 1:37 to build a 30-0 advantage.
Southwick’s strength quickly came to the surface when Eddie Martinez and Miguel Gonzalez pinned Westfield sophomore Keandre Godbolt and freshman Cam Foster, respectively.
Westfield stopped Southwick’s momentum though as Jack Yvon defeated Exavier Gonzalez, 6-0. The Rams won the next three matches though to close their deficit to three points, 33-30.
Senior Johnny Gourde secured a Westfield victory. After multiple blood stoppages in a close match, Gourde enforced his will upon his opponent and won by fall with 54 seconds remaining.
The “W” improved Westfield’s record to 4-1.

Southwick 60, Pioneer Valley Christian 29

SOUTHWICK – Southwick raced out to a 12-4 first-period lead, and led overwhelmingly at the halftime break 36-14 en route to a convincing 60-29 win over Pioneer Valley Christian in boys’ basketball Wednesday night at home.
Although it is early in the season, Southwick is off to an unbeaten start at 3-0. The Rams received a balanced attack – 11 different players scored for the home team – with Ryan LeClair leading the way with 11 points.
Nick Hough (9 points), Danny Scharmann (7), Chris Molta (6), Connor Roy (6), Matt Daley (5), Zach Thorne (5), Bradley Durand (4), Billy Strain (3), Brandon Blackburn (2), and Devin Parrow (2) all scored for Southwick.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Carpenter, Mount Everett soars
Mount Everett 62, St. Mary 15

Gwendolyn Carpenter scored a game-high 20 points, and Madison Ullrich added 12 to lead Mount Everett’s charge past St. Mary at Westfield Middle School North.
Jessica Crosby led St. Mary with eight points. Marissa Hannoush (4 points) drained a three-pointer for the Saints.

Four different players scored to help St. Mary (1-1) achieve its first victory of the 2016-17 season.
Quinn Powers, Aaron Blanchard, Kenny Bonney, and Pete Chrisanthopolous netted one goal apiece for St. Mary. Saints’ Shaun Gezotis recorded two assists, and Powers had one.
St. Mary dug themselves an early hole, trailing by two goals. With just under four minutes remaining in the first period, Powers lobbed a pass that Chrisanthopolous tracked down and whipped past Mount Everett goalie Cole Duval. Then, in the waning seconds of the first, Blanchard stuffed the equalizer into the net.
St. Mary added two more goals. Powers stole a pass and roofed a shot for the go-ahead score. A few minutes later, Bonney took a pass from Gezotis scored to extend the lead.
Mount Everett scored a harmless goal early in the third.
St. Mary defensemen Mike Nielsen, Val Reopel, Sam LaBombard, and Austin Wolfe held off a late Mount Everett charge.
St. Mary goalie Matt Brady finished with 31 saves.
