Thomas “Gunner” Laptew

WESTFIELD – Thomas Laptew, 78, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026.

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, he grew up in Granville, Massachusetts. He attended the local trade school and began his career working alongside his father at Stevens Paper Mill. He later went on to work for the City of Springfield at the Cobble Mountain Reservoir.

Tom, known to many as “Gunner,” had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing, truly embodying the spirit of an outdoorsman. He also played softball for many years at Whitney Field. In his free time, he enjoyed playing pitch and horseshoes, and he found great joy in cooking—especially when preparing meals to share with family and friends.

He was a proud member of American Legion Post 124 and the Slovak Hall.

Tom was predeceased by his father, Alec Laptew; his mother, Theresa (Killeen) Laptew; and his sister, Mary Stosick. He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; his beloved dog, Moxie; his daughter, Whitney Laptew; and his three granddaughters, Aubrey, Avery, and Alexa—affectionately known to him as his “A Team”; his sister, Annmarie (Jeff) Maceyka; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tom enjoyed watching the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, especially during their winning seasons. He had a special love for animals, especially his dogs. He will be remembered for hosting his annual pig roast during the last weekend of July, a cherished tradition that brought together friends and family and reflected his love of cooking, community, and celebration.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

End of life arrangements entrusted to Westfield-Avalon Funeral Home, 4 Princeton St, Westfield, MA 01085. To express condolences, please visit Tom’s memorial page at www.westfieldfuneralhome.com
