Three cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Southwick, three more residents in quarantine

SOUTHWICK- The Southwick Health Department announced March 27 that three residents tested positive for  COVID-19.

In a release sent Friday afternoon, the Health Department also stated there were three additional residents in self quarantine..

“The Southwick Board of Health, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, is continuously monitoring the community for spread of the disease, as well as conducting contact tracing of those that may have been exposed to the virus. While the number of positive cases is currently low, there is an expectation that the number will rise.” said the release sent by Health Director Tammy Spencer.

The Town of Southwick is already complying with state orders for schools to shut down until at least May 4. Gatherings of larger than 10 are currently prohibited and food services are running take-out only to mitigate the spread of the virus.

The town has also suspended bulk item and brush drop-off at the Town Transfer station until April 7. In the meantime, the Department of Public Works and Select Board will work on a new plan for disposal. Town buildings, and public parks have also been closed to the public as the outbreak spreads.

“The Town of Southwick continues to urge residents to take the following precautions to halt the spread of the disease: stay home unless absolutely necessary; if you must go out in public, practicing social distancing and proper hygiene etiquette, such as covering your cough or sneezes and washing your hands; and if you are experiencing signs of illness – fever, cough, shortness of breath – call your primary care provider for advice,” Spencer wrote in the release.

Westfield’s health department announced Thursday that 24 cases of coronavirus had been confirmed in the city, a number that did not appear to change as of Friday afternoon.

Gov. Charlie D. Baker announced Friday that any travelers coming into Massachusetts should enter quarantine for 14 days after their arrival.
