To the Editor

To the good people of Ward 3, especially those along the Orange St. Corridor, and Whitney Park; those from around my home; those around Grandmother’s Garden, WTA and up to Berkshire Ave.  To all the adults, big kids, little kids, and the students, faculty and staff at WTA: it is profound sadness that I must let you know of the passing of my best friend and dog Ollie.  She gave me a sense of worth, value and purpose; a reason to get up in the morning.  She was 16, and had been with me for 14 years.  So many of you have enjoyed her company, often asking how she is doing (but, not me).  So many who were concerned about the growths on her forehead, and leg, and the blood trail she would leave.  The 19th I had to bring her to the vet had have put to her rest.

This is one of the saddest thing I have ever had to do.  She was more than my best friend, she was my only real family as well.  She comforted me, played with me, took care of me, guarded me, helped me, and took for long walks.  But, today, the 19th, she could no long hardly stand, for some time could not get into the bed with me, so I slept on the floor, so she could be close to me while we slept, and she did.  She did not want to eat…and the look in her eyes told me the time had come.  Her mental health was getting rough for her as well, there were days she just sat there and trembled, did not know our words, who I was, or her name.  I could no longer make excuses.

But, because so many of you cared so much about her I had to let you know.  And even though the profound sadness, hurt and even anger that I feel right now I had to share it with you rather than people asking where she is, how is she doing?  It is better, as I did with the loss of Bear back in ’05 to let you know this way.  Again, thank you all for sharing your stories of grief at the passing of your best friends.  Now, to help her cat deal with this.  He both bullied her and guarded her.

Thank you all for your concerns…see there are still some wonderful people in our world.  Your former Ward 3 City Councilor, Brian Hoose…[email protected]   PS I will continue my editorials some may be angrier than usual and others sadder, so forgive me and try to understand this is my last sense of purpose….Brian
