GRANVILLE – According to Chief Matt Ripley, the Granville Fire department received a call at approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday night for a house fire on Main Road.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the fire was near a Christmas tree in the home’s living room, with some heavy heat and smoke damage. Fire personnel were able to knock down the fire within 15 minutes and the two occupants in the home were able to get out safely without any injuries.
“At this time, we’re not certain of the exact cause,” said Ripley.
Despite not knowing the exact cause, Ripley believes that a power strip that was used for the lights on the tree may have contributed but will not know for certain until the Massachusetts Fire Investigators Unit completes their investigation.
While Ripley reported that the homeowners noted that they had been watering the tree, the Chief reiterated that constant maintenance of a real tree is very important during the holiday season, and not doing so can result in a fire.
“It’s important that you water it regularly and make sure it doesn’t dry out,” said Ripley. “Always make sure you use the appropriate electrical power strips.”
