Westfield Council on Aging closed through April; meals, some services still available

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Senior Center is closed to the general public for all group programs and activities through the month of April.

Upcoming special events have been cancelled or postponed. Those who have purchased tickets in advance will be notified by phone regarding the status of the event. Services are available on a very limited basis. Take-out meals, prepared by the Senior Center kitchen staff, are available Monday through Friday.

Meals

The Senior Center Great Room is closed for congregate meals. However, Senior Center take-out meals are available for $3. Those who wish to purchase a meal should call the Senior Center at 562-6435 in the morning between 8:30 and 10 a.m. and provide a name and phone number. Their meal will be available for a drive-by pick-up near the Senior Center front patio between the hours of 11 and 12:30 that day. Please note that meals will be cooked but will have to be heated at home.

**Please enter the Senior Center parking lot via Murphy Circle,

which is the entrance farthest from the Senior Center building, for meal pick-up.

Services

AARP tax assistance at the Senior Center has been discontinued until further notice. Those scheduled for tax assistance at the Senior Center should make other arrangements to file their taxes. We are very sorry for this inconvenience.

Senior Benefits Coordinator, Karen Noblit, is conducting all SHINE meetings over the telephone. Please call Karen at 562-6435 to schedule a telephone consultation.

Council On Aging Outreach Coordinator, Joanne Ortegas, continues to assist with special cases.

Wellness Nursing services with Mary Ellen Asher, RN, have been discontinued until further notice.

We will continue to offer medical equipment loans at the Senior Center. Please call in advance to assure that we have the item(s) that you or your loved one needs.

Companion Program

Referrals to the Companion Program are on hold until further notice.

For those who are current clients, ‘Friendly Visits’ and medical transportation have been discontinued until further notice. Assistance with grocery shopping is available for those Companion Program clients who have no family or no family living in the area, pending the availability of volunteers. Telephone reassurance calls will be made to those clients who have discussed the need for one with our Companion Program Coordinator, Joyce Peregrin.

Westfield Middle School Senior Lunch Program

Bagged lunches are offered for pick-up at Abner Gibbs School from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Please remember that older adults are most at-risk for the Coronavirus.

The staff at the Senior Center is just a phone call away if you have questions or concerns. We can be reached Monday through Friday at 562-6435. As the Coronavirus situation changes, we will keep the public updated on the status of our services and programs.

Take this ‘time-out’ opportunity to reconnect with friends and relatives by phone or e-mail, enjoy some fresh air and get some exercise by beginning some non-strenuous yard clean-up, challenge yourself with a jigsaw puzzle, or read that novel that your friend recommended. Wave to your neighbors from your porch or front window!
