WESTFIELD- A fire broke out at the Pomeroy Dairy Farm Monday, killing 5 calves and destroying a barn before the blaze could be extinguished.

Nobody was injured, and the owners of the farm were able to rescue most of the cattle before the barn succumbed to the fire. Fire departments from the surrounding towns of Southwick, Montgomery, Westhampton, and Southampton responded to the call while teams from West Springfield and Holyoke went to the Westfield fire station to act as backup coverage.

Firefighters were able to save the structures adjacent to the barn. The Deputy Chief, Eric Bishop estimates that the damages totaled $300,000.

Westfield’s Acting Fire Chief, Patrick Egloff said during Monday evening’s Fire Commission meeting, “I want to say that the men and women of the fire Department, C Group in particular tonight, did a great job knocking it down.”

Egloff said that the area of the farm, on Russellville Road, has very little in the way of a water supply, and thanked the neighboring communities for their assistance in stopping the blaze.
