“These kids have nothing to hang their heads about,” Westfield National manager Shane Collins said. “It was a great month of baseball for us. We got better and better. These kids are hungry to prepare to get even better for next year.”
Pittsfield rallied from an early 3-0 deficit, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and exploded for a six-run second inning to forge an insurmountable lead.
“They just kept coming at us,” said Collins, whose team took the first lead of the game.
Westfield National jumped on top of Pittsfield with base hits from Ethan Porter, Anthony Schabowski, and Ryder Pieczarka, and a Josh Mayo sacrifice fly, but struggled to manufacture a big enough comeback after falling behind.
“Bottom line is at this level, the team that plays the best defense wins games,” Collins said.
“(Our players) battled,” he added. “We have a great group of kids that went one step further than last year. Next year we will look to take that next step.”
