BROOKFIELD – “Perhaps it was an aberration.”
Some Westfield Little League Softball insiders might have thought this after the girl’s astonishing 27-8 season debut Thursday against Quaboag, a game that proved, if nothing else, that Westfield was a force to be reckoned with.
After Saturday’s 22-12 thumping of Quaboag in game two of the series, it appears that the Westfield softball squad may soon be more than just a force to be reckoned with – they may be champions.
After two games in which the girl’s walloped an opponent who was 11-6 going into game one, and scoring 49 runs in those two contests, Westfield is game for a series against Winchendon’s all-stars for the state softball crown.
Bolstered by another stout pitching effort from wunderkind Sam Schieppe, Westfield was able to jump ahead early this time, and never looked back, mercy-ruling the opposition once again.
This time Schieppe was given a rest, with both Kelsey Kiltonic and Arielle Baillargeon taking over pitching duties and providing relief for the young ace.
Offensively, Westfield remained balanced, with hitting and RBIs coming from all corners of the lineup.
After the game, Coach Keith Raymond was excited with his newly minted 2-0 All-Stars.
“These girls played so much better today than in game one,” said the coach. “They’re hitting, defense and hustle were great today.”
Raymond also spoke for the rest of his staff in praising the efforts of Schieppe who turned in another stellar performance on the mound.
“We took her out after three, even though she could’ve gone longer,” said Raymond, hoping to preserve her arm for the Winchendon series, slated to begin next week.
