Westfield women finish 5th in XC invitational

WESTFIELD – The Westfield State University women’s cross country team placed fifth in the 17th Annual James Earley Invitational at Stanley Park on Saturday.
It was the largest ever field (43 teams, 453 runners) for the annual invitational as Westfield is also hosting the NCAA Division III New England Regionals on Nov. 10.
Nationally-ranked Middlebury College ran away with the team title, scoring 28 points as it placed five runners in the top 10. Amherst was second with 64 points followed by Wellesley (158), Colby (177), Westfield (228) and Coast Guard.
Amherst senior Keri Lambert took individual honors by crossing the finish line first in 21:30.11 on the 6,000 meters course.
Westfield sophomore Amy Trainque finished 15th in 23:05.38. The Owls’ other top runners were: senior Rachael Cardin (34th), freshman Ashlynne Xiarhos (52nd), freshman Abby Monette (61st) and sophomore Victoria VanAlstine-Tauer (66th).

Middlebury College ran away from the field of 40 men’s teams and 430 runners by scoring 23 points. Middlebury was led by senior Jack Davies, who crossed the finish line first in 25:40.96 on the 8,000 meters course.
Amherst was second with 111 points, followed by Connecticut College (140), WPI (154), Coast Guard (155), Bridgewater (182) and Westfield (242).
Senior Anthony Frissora was Westfield’s top runner, finishing 22nd in 27:03.67. He was followed by freshman Mike Skelly (37th), Cam Fairbanks (49th), Justin Connolly (66th), Steve Connolly (68th), and Mike Kelleher (70th).
