WESTFIELD – While the high school fall sports season officially begins this week for most area teams, one squad already opened in grand fashion.
The Westfield Bombers golf team opened the season 1-0 with a 155-211 win over Northampton Friday at Tekoa Country Club.
Senior Liam Whitman shot a career best even par-36 on the front nine to lead Westfield.
“He played awesome,” Westfield coach Chris Strycharz said of Whitman. “Chris kept it in play … It was really great to see.”
Senior Neil Sheehan and junior Ryan Towle each shot a 39 for Westfield, and Bombers’ freshman Jack Hogan finished with a 41.
“The kids played really well,” Strycharz said. “It was a really nice start for us.”
The Bombers’ head coach said although the team lost some key senior golfers, he believes his team has a realistic chance to compete for a league title and qualify for Western Mass.
“We’re not rebuilding, but we need some kids to step up,” he said. “They’re focused. They know wheat they’re supposed to do. We have a good shot.”
Westfield will look to extend its good fortune when it travels to take on West Springfield at Springfield Country Club Tuesday at 3 p.m.
