WHS boys’ tennis edge Spartans; Saints sweep

EAST LONGMEADOW – The Westfield High School boys’ tennis team swept singles play to edge host East Longmeadow, 3-2, Friday.
Loeiz Briand remained unbeaten at first singles 6-1, 6-1, Chris Unger took second singles, 6-4, 6-1, and Jacob Barbeiri won 7-5, 6-0 for Westfield. It was a key victory for Briand, who next faces two of the area’s top singles players when the Bombers host Minnechaug (Monday) and Longmeadow (April 29).
Tanner Dasso and Aaron Caplette lost a tough match in first doubles, 7-5, 6-4, and Jesse Burlingame and Alec Best, fell in a heartbreaker, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, (7-3).
SAINTS SWEEP: The St. Mary High School boys’ tennis team swept Sabis 5-0 at Forest Park Friday.
Zach Brown (7-5, 6-4), Zach Slepchuk (6-1, 6-0), and Austin Gois (6-0, 6-3) won in singles’ competition 1-2-3; Jake Neilsen and Corey Clemente (6-3, 6-4), and James Marasi and Kieran O’Donnell (7-5, 6-3) took first and second doubles, respectively.
STM GIRLS WIN: The St. Mary High School girls’ tennis team defeated Turners Falls for the first time in more than a decade, pulling out a 3-2 victory on the road Friday.
Abbie Rix (6-2, 6-2) and Emily Wodell (6-0, 6-2) won at first and second singles, respectively for St. Mary. Saints’ second doubles pair, Jessica Demers, and Mariah Suarez rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory.
