WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School field hockey team would not let Mother Nature rain on its parade.
Westfield earned a hard-fought 2-2 tie against Mohawk on a sloppy field at home Monday to improve to 8-4-1. The tie guarantees the Bombers will finish no worse than .500 with four games remaining, thus, securing a postseason bid.
“Westfield did a nice job fighting back,” said Westfield coach Karen Gomez, whose team was forced to rally.
A penalty set up Westfield’s first scoring effort.
Lexi Minicucci notched a goal on a penalty stroke with 22:13 left in the first half. The penalty was set up when a player’s foot stopped a ball from going into the Mohawk net. But Minicucci delivered in the 1-on-1 play.
Westfield rallied from a 2-1 deficit when Ashlee Owen flicked the ball off the goalie’s pads into the gaol with 6:28 remaining in the half.
The game was called with 20:44 remaining in regulation due to inclement weather.
