WHS Girls Lax Coach Paul Fenwick records 100th win

GRANBY – One hundred … cien … cent … cento … cem …100.
No matter what way you look at it, Westfield High School girls lacrosse coach Paul Fenwick’s 100th victory resonates loudly in any language. Fenwick and the Westfield Bombers held off a pesky Granby team on the road Tuesday, defeating the Rams 15-9 to deliver the head coach win No. 100.
“In this year, in Covid, it means a lot with everything we have all had to go through just to be able to play,” coach Fenwick said. “Personally. I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to coach this season. To have that opportunity and to have this happen … I’m just excited to keep this going.”
Westfield’s Lara Finnie (5 goals) and Emma Metcalf (4 goals, 1 assist) made that quest for 100 a reality for their head coach on Tuesday. Metcalf and Finnie scored five points apiece against Granby.
It was a struggle early on though for Westfield. Although the Bombers were playing the Rams, it was a straight-up dog fight.
No team had greater than a one-goal lead until late in the first half when Granby strung together two straight goals, scoring with 51.3 seconds and 12.6 ticks remaining in the second quarter to take an 8-6 advantage.
In the third quarter, Westfield roared back with six straight goals to take a commanding 12-8 lead. Finnie’s game-tying goal with 9:53 left in the third quarter was a thing of beauty as she made a stutter-step move out in front of the net, shaking off a defender to score. Metcalf scored the go-ahead goal a few moments later and the Bombers never trailed again.
“We really picked it back up (in the second half) and just kind of clicked back together as a team,” said Finnie, who is also approaching a milestone of her own. Finnie needs just two more points for 100. Her teammate, Metcalf, is seven shy of a hundred. “Once we got our heads back in the game … that’s when we really came together.”
Once the game ended and the win became official, the Bombers head coach finally had time to reflect upon his accomplishment.
“It is not something that is accomplished in any one year,” coach Fenwick explained. “It’s a collection of years. Over time, we’ve been able to put together a quality program year-in and year-out. We’ve been more on the better side of that than not since I’ve been here. I’ve felt good that I’ve had an impact on that … and there’s a lot more to come.”

Mia Slack had six saves in net for St. Mary’s, while Saints’ Caitlyn Potts and Sylvia Bastek played solid defense. Wisnaukas had seven draw controls and Hailey Raffa had four.
