WHS moves forward

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School field hockey team continues to pick up steam.
After fighting through the early portion of their schedule, Westfield’s field hockey players as a team are now 4-2-2. The Bombers celebrated a thrilling 2-1 win over visiting Greenfield yesterday.
The front line had a heavy hand in the victory as forward Mary Boudreau scored on a pass from forward Lexi Minicucci; forward Jordan Swift took a pass from forward Alex Affeldt to notch a goal.
“All four of (our forwards) did a nice job putting things together,” Westfield coach Karen Gomez said.
The Bombers coach credited Monica Browne, Rachel Szalankiewicz, Meaghan McClure, and Sara Wailgum with solid midfield play.
Westfield goalie Karly Mastello made three saves.

GOLF
Minnechaug 254, Westfield 260
Cam Dirico and Colin Dunn each shot a team-low 40 to lead Westfield.
“It was a good match,” said Westfield coach Chris Strycharz. “We had a good chance.

GYMNASTICS
Westfield 136.9, Minnechaug 129.4, Hampshire 113.7
The Westfield High School gymnastics team still has not blinked against any competition.
Westfield improved to 5-0 with a tri-meet sweep at home, and kept its five-plus-years unbeaten streak intact.
Taryn Hamel (32.7) and Angela Bonavita (32.7) finished 2-3 in the All-Around behind top-finisher, Emily Murphy, of Minnechaug. Murphy scored a 34.3
Hamel placed second on vault (8.6) and bars (8.1), behind only Murphy, while tying her teammate, Bonavita, on beam (8.7), and capturing second on the floor routine (8.65). Brendan Whitman placed first on the floor exercise with a 9.0.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Westfield def. Holyoke, 25-7, 25-13, 25-16
Tracy Midwood (21 assists, 3 aces), Mary Calabrese (4 aces, 5 kills), and Kate Menard (7 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces) led Westfield to a road victory.
The Bombers were fresh off a 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19 win over Chicopee.
Abby Hart led WHS with 10 kills, four blocks, 10 service points; Ellen Ferst had three aces and seven digs; and Menard finished with three kills, four blocks, and two aces in last week’s victory.

LATE RESULTS
BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY
Westfield’s Blake Croteau (15:54) and Tim Dostie (16:01) placed second and fourth overall at Saturday’s Amherst Invitational. The Bombers placed second in the team standings.

JV FIELD HOCKEY
Westfield 5, Greenfield 0
Westfield remained unbeaten at home with a shutout against visiting Greenfield. Mackenzie Millikan, Meg Parent, and Paige Templeton scored their first goals of the season, and Rachel Gelina and Grace Silva (penalty kick) scored.
Cara Onyski and Elizabeth Marcyoniak each tallied an assist.
Jourdan Frisbee and Lexi Levere combined for the shutout in net for the Bombers (7-2).
Westfield was coming off an impressive 6-0 win over Athol late last week.
In that game, captain Desiree Otero started the scoring five minutes into the game off an awesome assist from Jill Wroth. Onyski placed a ball firmly into the net off a pass from Silva at 17:34.
Gelina, a freshman, netted her first goal of the season at 9:36 after Gabbi Lunardini sent her a great assist. Freshman Julia Rowbotham added another goal to her season stats, collecting Millikan’s well-placed assist at 7:50.
The scoring frenzy continued when freshman Jill Wroth delivered another fantastic assist directly in front of the goal, this time to Lunardini. The final goal of the game was scored on a stroke when Onyski rifled the ball in the left corner of the cage.
Goaltenders Levere and Frisbee combined for a shutout.
