WHS outswims Central with ease

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School swimming and diving program continues to flourish on all levels, and across all genders.
The girls’ team won in resounding fashion 139 – 46, winning 10 of the 12 events.
Westfield truly dominated by sweeping first, second and third places in seven of the events and taking first and second in three of the remaining four. The outcome of the one-meter diving was particularly exciting as the Bomber girls’ swept this event with the trio of returning senior Kelsey Veillette, and two newcomers; Raina Wesson and Page Neylon.
Outstanding individual performances included state championship meet qualifying times in the 200 yard freestyle for Hope Walsh, 200 yard individual medley for Erin Lewis, 100 yard butterfly (Lauren Longley), 100 yard backstroke (Hope Walsh) and 100 yard breaststroke (Hannah Plourde).
The Bombers also turned in a number of Western Mass championship meet qualifying times in several events: 200 yard freestyle (Hannah Plourde, Shaylyn Jurczyk), 200 yard individual medley (Ali Johnstone), 50 yard freestyle (Kiersten Rosso),100 yard butterfly (Kelsey Johnstone), 100 yard freestyle (Erin Lewis), 500 yard freestyle (Jordan Jacobson, Shaylyn Jurczyk), 100 yard backstroke (Danielle Charette) and 100 yard breaststroke (Genna Senecal).
The Westfield boys also turned in a very strong win, 119-65, taking first place in all 12 events. Despite a number of good swims from Central, the Bombers’ depth carried the day.
Outstanding individual performances included a state championship meet qualifying time in the 50 yard freestyle for Jim Stinehart along with Western Mass championship meet qualifying times in several events: 200 yard free (John Dolan), 200 individual medley (Matt LaBombard), 100 yard fly (Matt LaBombard, Tim Kwarcinski), 100 yard freestyle (John Dolan), 100 yard backstroke (Tim Kwarcinski) and 100 yard breaststroke (Matt Jacobson).
Additionally, the Bombers demonstrated growing depth with breakout 50 yard freestyle performances in relays by first-year swimmers William Gilmore (28.26) and Ian Canty (29.96), along with senior Patrick Monette breaking the one minute mark for the first time for 100 yard freestyle (59.67).
