WESTFIELD – While several spring teams have been sidelined by poor field and weather conditions, one team has shined indoors.
The Westfield High School boys’ volleyball team won its fourth straight game to begin the season. The Bombers swept the visiting Belchertown Orioles 25-7, 25-7, 25-18 Thursday night.
“It was our most complete effort of the season,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said.
Eric Shilyuk delivered 15 assists and three aces, Manny Golob had three kills and six aces, Nick Hall contributed eight kills and three blocks, and Dmitriy Doroshenko finished with 12 digs.
“We clicked well offensively and served aggressively throughout to limit their attacking options,” coach Wingate explained.
Thursday’s contest was a rematch of the 2014 Western Massachusetts Division 2 boys’ volleyball quarterfinals. Westfield also won three straight sets in that game to advance to the semifinals.
Shilyuk and Golob also helped key that victory with solid all-around play. Ryan Bucko, now a senior, was stellar in that game as well with 10 kills and five blocks. Bucko has been instrumental in the team’s success thus far this season.
Westfield has not lost a set yet in 2015. The Bombers have defeated Athol, Ware, and Putnam in three straight sets.
On Friday, Westfield (4-0) will look to extend its winning streak to five games. The Bombers host Sci-Tech at 5:15 p.m.
