SOUTHWICK – Kyle Murphy collected three hits, including the game-winner with the bases loaded and two outs to lift the Westfield High School baseball team past Southwick 1-0 in nine innings Monday.
Southwick freshman pitcher Andrew Mitchell was sensational, scattering nine hits over nine innings, and striking out six. He also had two hits at the plate.
“I can’t say enough about how as a freshman going up against Westfield High, a powerhouse Division I team, he threw really well,” said Southwick coach Tim Karetka, whose team fell to 7-4.
Both teams’ defenses played very well.
“It was just a really good game,” coach Karetka said. “Hopefully we can get back on track after losing two close games in a row. I think it shows that we’re right there with some of the best teams.”
Southwick lost a heartbreaker to Palmer on Friday night, 3-2, when the Panthers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh innings.
Westfield pitcher Karl Kober allowed four hits and struck out seven batters in eight innings.
