WESTFIELD – Senior Julia Warner (11 kills, 13 digs), junior Carolyn Cote (33 assists, 4 service aces), and sophomore Casey Howe (8 kills, 8 blocks) led Westfield State University to a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-12, 25-20) victory over Worcester State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) volleyball action on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Westfield improves to 2-0 in the MASCAC and 10-7 overall. Worcester is 2-1 and 5-10.
The Owls held on to win the first game, 25-22, then Worcester State took game two, 25-18, led by the tandem of Alyssa Jasper and Amanda Lewis. Jasper posted a match-high 17 kills and Lewis had a team-high 27 assists.
Sparked by solid serving from Cote, Westfield bounced back to dominate the third game, 25-12.
Worcester jumped out to an early lead in the fourth game, but Westfield regrouped and took the lead for good, 14-13. Leading 18-15 following a Lancer timeout, Westfield scored on consecutive blocks to take a 20-15 lead. The Owls ended the match when Lindsay Rescott and Carole Duquette teamed up for another block.
Rescott finished with eight kills and 12 digs and libero Kayleigh Shea also had 12 digs. Cote led players from both teams with her 33 assists and four service aces. Howe, a 5-11 middle hitter who had been sidelined with an injury, played well in compiling her match-high eight blocks, which included two solo blocks.
Megan Brown and Meghan Deighan recorded eight and seven kills, respectively, for the Lancers. Brown also had team highs of 12 digs and three service aces.
