WESTFIELD – Sophomore forward Emily Becher scored the game’s lone goal in the 37th minute as the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors outlasted the Westfield State Owls women’s soccer team, 1-0, Saturday evening at Alumni Field.
Sophomore midfielder McKenzie Reimondo (Portland/ Portland, Conn.) snuck a pass through multiple Owl defenders and Becher (Woodstock Academy/ Brooklyn, Conn.) took control of the ball just inside the right side of the box, ripping a shot into the lower left corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Eastern Connecticut improves to 3-1-1 on the season with the win, while Westfield State drops to 1-3-0.
Westfield outshot Eastern Connecticut, 7-5, including putting three shots on net to one for the Warriors, but the Owls could not push through for a goal.
Two minutes into the second half, Westfield State freshman midfielder Lexi Kulik (Granby/ Granby, Conn.) launched a deep shot from outside the box that was a foot above the crossbar.
The Owls’ best scoring chance came in the 81st minute, when sophomore forward Hannah Zannini’s shot deflected off the hands of Eastern Connecticut goalkeeper Rachel Skelton (East Lyme/ East Lyme, Conn.) before being cleared from in front of an empty net by freshman back Claire Newman (Cromwell/ Cromwell, Conn.).
Skelton made three saves to earn her third win of the season for Warriors.
Westfield State returns to action on Saturday, September 19, when the Owls play host to MASCAC foe Salem State at Alumni Field at 6 p.m.
