WSU splits with MM

WESTFIELD – Westfield State sophomore starter Shane Bogli tossed a shutout and Owls’ senior shortstop Colin Dunn accounted for three of the Owls four runs in the opener, as Westfield split a MASCAC baseball doubleheader with Mass Maritime.
Westfield State won game one by a 4-0 score, but dropped the nightcap 7-5.
Bogli was the story in game one, allowing just six hits and striking out five to improve to 6-1 on the season. Westfield scored two runs in the first inning as Dunn singled home Casey Boudreau with the first run, and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
In the third, the Owls netted two more runs, as Nick Martin’s fielder’s choice scored Boudreau, and Dunn singled and later scored on an error.
Dunn and Boudreau accounted for all four of the Owls’ hits in the game. Brian Kwedor (2-6) took the loss for Mass Maritime.
In game 2, the Buccaneers rallied from a 4-3 deficit to gain victory. Tied at 4-4 in the top of the fifth, Jackson Simone doubled, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on Dylan Sullo’s base hit to short to grab a 5-4 lead.
The Bucs tacked on a pair of runs in the sicth on RBI singled from Marley Dembitzki and Nick Haley to extend the lead to 7-4.
Westfield got one back in the bottom of the seventh, with Anthony Crowley plating Jared Ferrari with an RBI single, but the Owls rally died with runners on first and second to end the game.
MMA starter John Teehan worked five innings to pick up the win, while Westfield’s Patrick Jordan (1-2) took the loss after working 2.2 innings in relief of Vincenzo Camera.
AJ Luciano finished with three hits in game 2 for the Buccaneer, with Simone and Dembritzki each knocking a pair of hits and an RBI apiece. Mason Ashburn worked two innings of relief to earn a save for the Bucs.
Dunn finished with three hits for the Owls, while Crowley added a pair of hits.
Westfield State is now 19-9 overall and 11-4 in the MASCAC. MMA is 8-21 and 5-10 in conference play.

GEGETSKAS GETS K RECORD: Westfield State senior lefthander John Gegetskas set the Owls career record for strikeouts, and Alex Benevidies hit a three-run bomb to lead the Owls to an 18-5 win over Mass Maritime Academy in a MASCAC baseball game in Buzzards Bay, Mass. on Thursday night.
Gegetskas struck out Marley Dembritzki swinging to end the fourth inning, the 235th strikeout of Gegetskas’ career, passing the mark set by set by Bob Moniz ’78. Gegetskas set the Owls single season record for strikeouts last year as a junior. He’s increased his strikeout rate this season, fanning more than 11 hitters per nine innings pitched.
Gegetskas tossed six innings, allowing three hits and just one earned run while striking out 10. He improved his record to 4-2 on the season and now has 240 career strikeouts.
Benevides launched a three-run home run to center field, the first of his collegiate career, in the top of the fourth inning to help stake the Owls to an 11-0 lead.
Westfield got two hits each from Casey Boudreau, Jacob Butler and Colin Dunn. Dunn and Benevides each finished with three RBI for the Owls.
