WSU, WCSU play to 1-1 draw

WESTFIELD – Westfield State University and Western Connecticut State University battled to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference men’s soccer game last night.
Both teams remain winless; Westfield is 0-2-1 and Western Connecticut is 0-3-1.
Despite being outshot, 16-6, Western Connecticut led for most of the game. The Colonials scored in the 36th minute on Chris Jeffrey’s perfectly executed diving header off corner kick by Rodolfo Rocha.
Westfield had a goal nullified because of an offsides early in the second half, then the Owls scored the equalizier in the 74th minute on a penalty kick by Jon Principato. Westfield was awarded the penalty kick following a Western Connecticut handball in the box.
Western Connecticut goalie Jack Holub recorded six saves and Westfield goalie Keith Hevey had two stops.
Western Connecticut led in corner kicks, 9-7, while Westfield was flagged for five offsides to Western’s four.

The Owls were outshot, 2-0, in the 20 minutes of overtime even though they finished with the 10-shot advantage, including an 8-1 margin in the second half.
