WESTFIELD – The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering a range of outdoor classes for all levels beginning in April and May. All classes are free to members, with varying fees for non-members. Pre-registration is required.

“We know that people are more comfortable working outside, and we still want to be there for people who want to work out outside of a gym,” said YMCA Health & Wellness Director Cindy Agan. She said all outdoor classes will follow CDC and Massachusetts COVID-19 guidelines.

Beginning April 6, the Y will be offering Kickboxing and Junior Fit classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. outdoors in the Y parking lot.

Kickboxing starts with a full-body workout that engages every muscle group, with a strong focus on the core. The rapid movements in this class will improve flexibility, balance, and coordination, while building faster reflexes.

Junior Fit, the outdoor youth training class for ages 7 to 10, will allow the children to have fun while building strength and endurance.

Registration is required for both classes. Session I is in April, and Session II in May. Both classes are free for members, $65 per session for non-members.

Every Thursday beginning April 8 through the end of June, a weekly fitness Walking class will be offered at Stanley Park at 10:45 a.m. This class will focus on walking a timed mile and end with some strength training exercises. Participants are encouraged to pack a lunch and stay to socialize after class.

The Walking Class will meet at the tennis course entrance, and will be walking on pavement. “The class will walk a mile and will be goal-oriented. Each week we will hope to improve on the time,” Agan said. Pre-registration is required for the Walking Class, which is free for members, and $20 per month for non-members.

In May, the Y will also begin offering classes at Grandmother’s garden. Yoga with certified instructors will be offered on Fridays and Sundays at 10 a.m. through the summer.

On Saturdays beginning in May and throughout the summer is Boot Camp at 8:30AM, which involves cardio with body strength weight training, Agan said, adding that customized workouts are also available by calling the Y for Outdoor Personal Training packages.

“Whether you’re trying to get back into a workout routine or start a fitness routine, these classes are a good way to get started or back into a routine,” Agan said. She said the Y’s goal is also to get people back together and socializing again safely.
