SALEM – Westfield State freshman Carly Zona (Auburn, Mass.) scored a goal late in the second half which proved to be the difference, lifting the Owls to a 2-1 victory over Salem State Saturday afternoon on ‘Think Pink’ day at Alumni Field.
Westfield boosts its Little East Conference record to 5-3 while improving to 7-6 overall. The Vikings continue to struggle, as they drop to 2-11 overall and 0-8 in the LEC.
Despite an uneventful beginning to the first half, the Vikings found the back of the net first when Micaela Keogh (Reading, MA) shot a ball on net off a corner which was tipped in by Natalie Bourne (Tewksbury, MA), giving Salem State a 1-0 lead with two minutes remaining in the half.
Ten minutes into the second half, Westfield State answered when Holly Broullette (Burlington, MA) carved her way through Salem State’s defense and beat Vikings’ goaltender Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, MA) on a breakaway to knot the score at 1-1.
Moments later, the Owls took the lead when Zona rifled a slap shot from just inside the arc that put the Owls on top 2-1.
Westfield State junior goalkeeper Megan Fountaine (Scituate, MA) had an easy day in net as she stopped three shots, while Woodin made nine saves for the Vikings in the loss.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, October 20 when they host the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors on Alumni Field at 7:00 p.m.
