10 Things (I Think) I Know

1. Twenty years ago when I started my career at The Westfield Evening News, the New England Patriots were a lowly 5-11 without a Super Bowl title. For the first time in two decades, it feels as if they may be trending in that direction again.

2. How about those Cow…er, Pittsburgh Steelers?!? The 2020 version of the Steel Curtain is the NFL’s lone unbeaten at 7-0.

3. Seeking some normalcy, it was a welcome sight to see “This is Us” return to television this past week …at least until the characters were wearing masks. I am not sure how I feel about that…

4. …Although watching the “Superstore” staff deal with the early days of COVID was hilarious. It was fun to laugh again.

5. With no real release dates in sight for movies, it appears we will have to savor the latest fun, mind-bending thriller from Christopher Nolan, Tenet. I’m going to have to rewind the tape on that one again before you I give you my full grade.

6. As the abbreviated high school sports fall season comes to an end, I want to personally congratulate every student-athlete at Westfield, Westfield Technical Academy, and St. Mary’s high schools, as well as Southwick golf. I had the pleasure of meeting some of the nicest, smartest kids. The Greater Westfield area’s future is in great hands.

7. Westfield definitely missed out on some championship titles with the cancellation of high school sports this past spring. Had the postseason not been canceled this fall due to coronavirus concerns, I truly believe we would have seen several championship runs from the Bombers, Tigers, and Saints.

8. Longtime Westfield High School gymnastics coach Joanne Hewins has the Bombers back on top again in that sport. This past week, junior Lizzie Galczynski won her first all-around competition, propelling the Bombers to their third straight victory.

9. Westfield girls volleyball seniors Irelis Rodriguez and Viktoria Pavlyuk delivered a sensational performance on “Senior Night” last week, slamming the competition for the seventh straight time this season. The Bombers improved to 7-0 with a 3-1 win over the visiting Amherst Hurricanes.

10. Just for the record – – what coach Hewins and volleyball head coach Tyler Wingate have done for their respective programs is legendary.
