Daniel J. Mahoney

WESTFIELD: Mahoney, Dan obit oldflagDaniel Joseph (“Spin”) Mahoney, 98, of Westfield, MA, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon surrounded by his loving family.  He was born February 7, 1918 in Westfield, MA. He was the beloved son of the late Daniel James and Catherine Shea Mahoney.  Daniel graduated from Westfield High School in 1938 and served in the US Army Air Corp as a Captain during WWII. He was named ”top man” as a pilot on the bombing team flying B-29’s.  He married Eleanor O’Connor on January 7, 1950 and together they were blessed with six children. Dan had many successful careers in his lifetime including owner of M&M taxi service as well as a fleet of school busses, a Westfield Police Officer, a Springfield School Teacher and a U.S. Postal Employee.  He loved playing golf into his 90’s, enjoyed all of the New England sports teams, and was an avid reader of history, current events, and mystery novels. Spending holidays, vacations, playing cards, board games and watching sporting events with his family brought him the most pleasure. He also enjoyed traveling, especially up to Saratoga for the horse races. He was a long time member of the American Legion Post 124 and a lifetime member of the Sons of Erin. For 22 years, he and his beloved companion of 35 years, Ann Wise, wintered in New Smyrna, FL.

Dan created a very close and loving family. He was especially proud of his six children: Kathryn Milligan and husband Mick, Joanne Mahoney and husband Allen, Eileen Jachym and husband James, Susan Castanera and husband David, Daniel Jr. and wife Marcela all of Westfield, MA, and Anne Bondur and husband Thomas of San Jose, CA.  He had twelve cherished grandchildren, Katie (George) Delgado, Claire (Ryan) Lebeau, Timothy, Daniel, Colin, and Conor Mahoney, Sean Milligan (Lindsay), Kristin and Joseph Jachym, Christopher and Andrea Castanera, Patrick Maloney and two-step grandchildren Mitchell and Andrew Bondur.  Dan also had five great grandchildren:  Tyler, Joseph and Noah Delgado, Jake Jachym, and Bennett Lebeau.  He also leaves a giant Irish family full of in-laws, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his adored wife Eleanor M. O’Connor, loving sisters and brother Catherine, Mary, and Richard Mahoney. The family wants to thank the Holyoke Soldiers Home for the wonderful care they gave him and the dignity and respect they showed him as a veteran. Their care and kindness will never be forgotten.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, from 10-11:30 AM in Firtion Adams FS, 76 Broad St., Westfield, MA  01085, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12 noon in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church, 127 Holyoke Rd. Westfield, MA 01085.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Southampton Rd. Westfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Daniel’s name may be made to The Holyoke Soldier’s Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA  01040.
