LOUISVILLE, KY – Former Westfield High School Bomber Ryan Summers broke out of a slump in a big, big way for the country’s fourth-ranked college baseball team.
Summers, a sophomore outfielder, went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the No. 4 Louisville Cardinals past the Virginia Tech Hokies 13-0 Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
It was Louisville’s fourth double-figure scoring performance in its last five outings, and the Cardinals’ seventh shutout of the season.
For Louisville (22-5, 8-3 ACC), it was also their fifth straight victory, a stretch in which the Cardinals have outscored their opponents 64-8. The red birds improved to 18-1 at home.
It was a breakout game for Summers, who had been just 2-for-25 in his previous at-bats this season.
On the mound, junior lefthander Drew Harrington scattered five hits in six shutout innings to win his fifth straight and improve to 6-1 on the season. Harrington has 38 strikeouts and only eight walks in 44 innings while lowering his ERA to 1.23.
Junior righthander Shane Hummel added two strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief, while redshirt freshman right Chandler Dale had two Ks in a perfect ninth to complete the shutout.
The two teams were expected to conclude their series late Monday night. – University of Louisville Cardinals baseball material used in this report
