Lancers ink another fabled ‘W’

WESTFIELD – Now that we have turned the pages on a new season of high school boys’ lacrosse, the latest chapter in the Westfield-Longmeadow rivalry has unfolded.
The two teams renewed their rivalry Friday in the Whip City. Although it was a fierce battle throughout, Longmeadow scored five of the last six goals to pull away against Westfield for an 8-3 victory.
Brian Wiles recorded a hat trick for Longmeadow. Lancers’ Will Lukas scored twice.
Lukas notched one of the game’s first two goals as Longmeadow got off to a fast start. With 2:18 remaining in the opening quarter, though, Max Maggipinto tallied a goal for Westfield to cut the lead in half.

Westfield nearly tied it midway through the third quarter when Matt Chlastawa hit the crossbar with a slingshot. The Bombers almost scored the equalizer a short time later when Mason Balch found a sliver of daylight, squeezing a shot in between a sea of black-jerseyed Lancers to Dan Gosselin, who fired a bounding ball toward the Longmeadow net. The shot went awry.
Longmeadow scored 49 seconds later to reclaim a two-goal lead.
Balch kept Westfield within striking distance, scoring with 17 ticks on the clock to pull the Bombers within 3-2. Longmeadow responded with a goal from Wiles 11 seconds later.
It snowballed from there as Longmeadow reeled off three more goals in the fourth quarter to take a commanding 7-2 advantage. Balch scored a goal with 34 seconds remaining in regulation. Wiles notched his third with two ticks on the clock.
