Palma, Craig set records

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Freshman Ashley Craig (Westford Academy/Groton, Mass.) broke her own school record in the pole vault and junior Naloti Palma (Westborough/Westborough, Mass.) won the weight throw and the shot put to highlight the Westfield State women’s track and field team’s efforts at the Wesleyan Indoor Invitational II meet on Saturday.
Craig won the pole vault, clearing 3.38 meters (11 feet, 1 inch). That was ½ inch better than her height at the Springfield Invitational meet earlier this season.
Palma was the class of the throwing events. She tossed the 20-lb. weight 14.85m 48-08.75 and had a dominated the shot with a school-record throw of 13.97m 45-10.00, more than eight feet farther than her closest competitor. Palma’s throw was more than a foot better than her previous shool record best of 44’8-3/4″ set earlier this season at Springfield College.
Other top owls included Andrea Hicks second-place finish in the 3000 meters 11:52.19 and Jenn Holley’s fifth in the 800 meters.
Ashley Monahan and Rachel Cardin competed at the Boston University BU John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday, January 30. Monahan ran the 800 meters in 2:21.78 while Cardin covered the mile in 5:22.20 competing against a host of quality runners from Division I, II and III institutions.
