WESTFIELD – Over the course of several years time, Westfield Vocational-Technical and St. Mary’s high schools have battled in local boys’ basketball, often producing memorable games.
The latest round goes to Westfield Voc-Tech.
Xavier Haskins scored a game-high 22 points, and teammates Alex Stepanchuk (15 points) and Tyler French (11) also netted double-digits in the scoring column to lead Voc-Tech past St. Mary’s 64-50 Tuesday night at Westfield Middle School South.
“It was a good game all the way to the end,” St. Mary’s coach Joe Molta said. “We just ran out of gas. I thought our kids played really, really well. Westfield Voc-Tech just shot the ball extremely well.”
Voc-Tech hit seven 3-pointers.
“That just hurt us,” coach Molta said of the opposition’s long-range baskets.
Andrew Illnicky and Nick Garde led St. Mary’s with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Saints’ Jake Butler had nine.
“I’m very impressed with the way our kids have performed (this season),” Molta said. “They’ve come a long ways, so hopefully next year (there will be) better things.”
