Split decision for WHS soccer

HOLYOKE – Matt Butera curled a nice left-footed corner kick directly into the net and dribbled through the ball through nearly a half-dozen defenders before scoring a second goal as Westfield shut out Holyoke 5-0 in a boys’ soccer game Tuesday at Roberts Field.
Bombers’ Ryan Prenosil finished with a goal and one assist, Dante White and Igor Belokopytov scored one goal apiece, and Andrew Burrage had an assist.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
Blue Devils surge past Bombers
Northampton 4, Westfield 1

Four different Northampton players scored – Bailey Maurer, Alex Bertuch, Olivia Pruett, and Hannah Finn – to spoil Westfield’s home opener.
The Blue Devils led just 1-0 at the half.
Shelby Chambers scored the lone goal for the Bombers. Gianna Katsounakis assisted on the play.

Mello, Kinsman lift Rams
Southwick 2, Agawam 1

Alex Mello scored the game-tying goal one minute into the second half, and Lydia Kinsman notched the game-winner five minutes later to post a thrilling home victory.
Kinsman and Mello assisted each other on both scoring plays.
Rams’ goalie Tori Richburg recorded six saves.
Rayna Ramirez scored Agawam’s only goal. Brownies’ keeper Jenna Beach made six saves.

Saints silenced
Renaissance 5, St. Mary 0

Renaissance put together a 3-0 first-half lead, and cruised to a road victory at Westfield Middle School North.
Joanna Feliciano and Desiree Crawford scored two goals apiece. Julissa Soto chiped in one.
St. Mary played well, but could not crack the scoreboard. Saints’ forwards Lexi Shedd and Jessica Crosby, midfielders Olivia White and Chloe Lussier, and defensemen Sam Manchino and Jenna Turrini delivered solid play.
Renaissance goalie Shaylene Allan (25 saves) earned a shutout.

Adams, Tech trick Tigers
Franklin Tech 3, Westfield Technical Academy 0

Brooke Adams notched a hat trick – all three goals came in the first half – to lead Franklin Tech at Jachym Field.

Ven Heynigen, Gators attack in opener
Gateway 3, Mahar 1

Jessica Van Heynigen (2 goals) and Taryn Kubik (one) led Gateway to an opening day win. Gators’ Samantha Belardo, Rachel LeBarron, and Heynigen had one assist apiece.

FIELD HOCKEY
Sullivan, Bombers soar past Rams
Westfield 4, Southwick 0

Leighanne Sullivan (2 goals, 1 assist) had a hand in three of the team’s four goals as Westfield blanked visiting Southwick.
Olivia Chaoush and Moira McDonald also scored for the Bombers. Fiona Cioch, Gabbi Lunardini, and Otero each had assists.
Westfield goalies Emily Ciccolo and Gwen Smith finished with three saves apiece.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Falcons sweep Bombers
Minnechaug def. Westfield 25-13, 27-25, 25-15

Zoe Lipkins (9 kills, 15 digs, 3 aces), Steph Chapin (8 aces, 6 kills, 6 digs), Katie Gagnon (23 assists), and Michaela Cronin (9 kills) combined to lead Minnechaug to victory.
Kelsey Johnstone (14 assists, 4 aces) and McKenzie Chabon (6 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces) led Westfield.

GOLF
Hogan helps WHS to 2-0
Westfield 163, West Springfield 172

Freshman Jack Hogan shot a one-over-par 38 to help propel Westfield past West Springfield at Springfield Country Club. Ryan Towle (40), Neil Sheehan (41), and Sean Murphy (44) rounded out the top four scores for the Bombers.
Westfield improved to 2-0.

Tigers shut out
Palmer 24, Westfield Technical Academy 0

Westfield Technical Academy’s No. 1 golfer, Matt King shot a team-best 44 at Quaboag Country Club.

JV GIRLS’ SOCCER
Agawam 1, Southwick 0

Hannah Gerrish and Maya Daley combined for 11 saves for Southwick. Rams’ freshman MF/F Valeria Salva had a standout effort.
