Piper leads pack

NFLlogoWestfield resident Robert Piper claimed the latest weekly prize, a gift certificate to The Tavern Restaurant, with his first-ever victory in our pro football contest, “Beat ‘The Putz.’”
Piper put together a solid 12-2 record in Week 13, eclipsing Bob Kidrick’s identical mark by one tiebreaker point (52-51).
“The trick is to keep playing,” said Piper, who noted his commitment to playing the contest each week for the last three years. “You can’t win it if you don’t play.”
Piper said he and a friend congregate at a local doughnut shop weekly to make their team selections.
“We typically bet a coffee and match cards,” he said. “Sometimes we’ll pick out one game, and bet a doughnut and a coffee.”
There are still four games remaining to win a weekly prize or qualify for the grand prize, a flat-screen television, courtesy of Manny’s TV & Appliances. A total of 26 entrants qualified this past Sunday by besting my 9-5 mark.
Anyone with 11-3 or 10-4 records in Week 13 is now eligible to win the TV to be drawn at season’s end.
Week 14 features some key matchups with playoff implications, such as Pittsburgh (7-5)-Cincinnati (10-2); Buffalo (6-6)-Philadelphia (5-7); and our very own New England Patriots (10-2), who after winning 10 consecutive games to open the season have lost two straight, travel to Houston to take on the 6-6 Houston Texans.
