Too tough a climb

WILLIAMSTOWN – Monument Mountain junior forward Sean McCormack exploded for a game-high 25 points, and the fifth-seeded Mounties went on a 34-11 run in the second half to defeat No. 13 Southwick-Tolland 63-38 in a West Division 3 boys’ basketball quarterfinal Thursday night.

Southwick (11-11) rallied from a double-digits deficit early in the third quarter, thanks in large part to consecutive 3-pointers from Hunter Iglesias. The Rams pulled to within 29-27 with 4:59 remaining in the quarter after a free throw from Matt Daley.
Monument Mountain (17-5) countered with a 12-0 run. McCormack sparked the run with a 3-pointer, two-point shot, and two free throws – all in a row.
Ryan LeClair hit an and-one with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter to slow the run, briefly, but Monument Mountain quickly responded with 3-pointers from four different players to pull away.
Daley and Iglesias finished with eight points apiece to lead Southwick.
