WESTFIELD – Westfield State University student-athletes won 11 events as the Owls women’s track and field team won the 2018 MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, contested at Bridgewater State University on Saturday.
Senior Jessie Cardin won three events for the Owls, claiming the 1500 meters, the 5,000 meters, and the 3000 steeplechase. Cardin’s time of 10:46.12 set both a MASCAC and New England Alliance meet record, (breaking a mark set by Westfield State alumna Kerry Arouca). Cardin led an Owls group that swept places 1-5 in the 5,000, as she was followed in by Kerry O’Neil, Kait Pajer, Julie Carroll and Lauren Fitzgerald.
Westfield also got another record-breaking performance from senior pole vaulter Ashley Craig, who cleared 3.86 meters (12-‘8″), which set a MASCAC and Alliance meet record, as well as improving her own school record height, which she has increased in each of the last three weeks.
Other event winners for the Owls included Rachel Farley in the 800, Brianna Deloury in the high jump, and Lauren Gilderdale in the discus.
Westfield State also captured the top spot in three relays, winning the 4×100, the 4×400, and the 4×800.
The 4×100 unit of Craig, Lexi Popp, Kerri Long and Sabrina Pray hung a school record time of 48.28 on the board as well.
Westfield finished with 271 points, easily outdistancing runner up Worcester State, which was second with 168 points. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
