WESTFIELD – Granville Road was closed for almost eight and a half hours Sunday after a single car crash took out a utility pole and a tree.
An emergency dispatcher received a 6:09 a.m. call from a motorist who reported that a car had rolled over after striking a utility pole and reported that wires were down in the street and were burning.
Moments later, a second caller reported that he was the operator of the crashed car and was entrapped inside it. The police response was augmented by the fire department which dispatched an ambulance, a rescue ruck and a pumper. The Westfield Gas and Electric Department’s dispatcher was advised of the crash and sent a crew to the site.
Officer Brendan Irujo was the first emergency responder to arrive at the accident scene near the Springfield water works filter beds and reports that a tree and a utility pole had snapped as a result of the crash and the road was completely blocked.
The operator of the crashed 2018 Hyundai Elantra, a 38-year-old Granville man, was extricated from the car by Westfield firefighters and told police, before he was transported to Baystate Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, that he had fallen asleep.
The State Police control center in Northampton was advised that the road was closed and dispatchers there were asked to contact the Granville Highway Department to request that a “Road closed” sign be posted at the intersection of Old Westfield Road and Route 57 in their community.
The road was closed for more than eight hours before the car was towed to the police impound yard and the pole and tree were cleared from the roadway allowing it to be reopened for traffic at 2:41 p.m.
