Planet Fitness closes doors to Westfield gym; app offers virtual workouts

WESTFIELD – Citing an “unprecedented” and “rapidly changing” situation surrounding the coronavirus, or COVID-19, Planet Fitness has closed its Westfield-based facility.
“Given the increased threat that COVID-19 poses to our global community, and out of an abundance of caution, Planet Fitness will temporarily close the remainder of its corporate stores that are still open,” Planet Fitness CEO Chris Rondeau said in a prepared statement. “The health and wellbeing of our Planet Fitness Family is our #1 priority.”
The temporary closure began late Tuesday night and is expected to remain in effect through March 31. The company is strongly encouraging its franchisees to do the same.
“This was a difficult decision to make but we believe it is the right one,” Rondeau said.
Members will not be required to pay for the time period while the club is closed, according to the club’s CEO.
While the gym will be closed for workouts, and disruption to daily routines will likely become more prevalent as the virus continues to impact life around the Whip City, surrounding communities as well as the region, and the whole country, for that matter with more people confined to their homes, Planet Fitness is offering a healthy alternative.
“Physical and mental health is extremely important, especially during stressful and uncertain times,” Rondeau said. “While we will miss seeing you in the club for the time-being, we are still here to motivate and support you along your fitness journey.”
Rondeau is encouraging everyone to download the Planet Fitness App, which includes access to fitness content and more than 500 exercises that can be done at home. Planet Fitness will also host “Home Work-Ins,” a series of free fitness classes that will be streamed live on the Planet Fitness Facebook Page Monday-Friday at 7 p.m.
The fitness classes will led by Planet Fitness’s certified trainers, as well as special guests. No equipment is needed and all classes are expected to last 20 minutes or less.
“I would like to personally thank the Planet Fitness community for your understanding and support as we navigate these unchartered waters,” Rondeau said. “More than ever, we are committed to doing everything we can to support our members and team members during this difficult time.”
Rondeau confirmed that the club will reopen when conditions improve.
