LEOMINSTER – The Westfield Starfires ran into a brick wall in the form of their chief nemesis yet again.
The Worcester Bravehearts homered three times en route to a 9-6 win over the Westfield Starfires Sunday night at Doyle Field. E.J. Exposito (NYIT), Aidan Wilde (Stonehill), and Zachary DeMattio (Wheaton) each launched a dinger in the latest meeting between the two teams.
Westfield (13-7) managed just four hits against Worcester, the biggest of which was a home run from Michael DeMartino (Southern Connecticut State University).
It was the second straight loss for Westfield.
On Saturday, the North Shore Navigators overwhelmed the Westfield Starfires, 7-1. Five North Shore batters had multi-hit games, including Sal Frelick (Boston College), Logan Bravo (Harvard University), Jake McElroy (Holy Cross), Sean Lawlor (University of Maine), and Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University). Cam Climo (UMass-Lowell) had a home run for the Navigators.
Westfield clean-up batter Ramon Jimenez (Boston College), of Chicopee went 2-for-4.
On Friday, the Westfield Starfires batted back the Worcester Starfires, 14-2.
Reggie Crawford (3-for-6, 2 runs, RBI), Drew DeMartino (3-for-6, 2 runs, RBI), Jimenez (3-for-5, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), and Jonny Tuccillo (3-for-5, 3 runs) finished with three hits apiece. Jimenez, Eric Callahan, and Braydon Seaburg each homered.
Westfield starting pitcher Chase Jeter (West Hartford) scattered three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out six batters and walking one. Patrick Gallagher (University of Connecticut), L.T. Pare (Merrimack College), and Josh Cohen (UConn) each provided an inning of scoreless, hitless relief for the Starfires.
Westfield enters the final full week of games in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League trailing the Nashua Silver Knights (18-12) by a full five games for a spot in the championship series. The Worcester Bravehearts entered Monday with a league-leading record of 18-10.
The Starfires and Bravehearts will meet in a crucial double header showdown at Bullens Field Tuesday at 4 and 6:30 p.m. The two teams will again play Wednesday in Leominster at 7 p.m.
