WESTFIELD – A 74-year-old Agawam resident was listed in stable condition Friday evening at Baystate Medical Center after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on East Mountain Road Friday afternoon.
City police responded to the 3:49 p.m. report of the crash and their investigation shows that the victim, James A. Dumphy, 74, of 341 Springfield St., Agawam, was operating his 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound when it collided with a northbound Ford F350 truck operated by Ermie J. Hernandez, 34, of Springfield.
Lt. Jerome Pitoniak and Officer Harry Sienkiewicz of the Westfield Police Department’s Traffic Bureau responded to the accident scene and were observed examining scrapes on the road which appeared to indicate that the operator of the motorcycle laid the bike down and slid about 40 feet before the impact.
The motorcycle came to rest, upside down, in front of the rear dual wheels of the truck which came to rest roughly at a right angle to the roadway on a lawn about 500 yards north of the turnpike overpass on East Mountain Road with the trailer it was pulling, loaded with gravel, extending into the roadway.
Dumphy was transported to Baystate Medical Center by Westfield Fire Department ambulance where he was admitted with injuries which were described as non-life threatening.
Hernandez was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by Traffic Bureau officers.
